UBC Fundraiser

Help fund UBC Ultimate’s 2014 season! UBC ultimate’s two teams (women’s and men’s) compete against the best teams on the continent in the USA Ultimate College series.

Both teams are off to a great start! After the Stanford Invite that included victories against UCLA, U Washington, and Sonoma State, the women are currently ranked 8th (of 154). After tournaments in Santa Barbara and San Diego that included victories against Stanford, Arizona, Berkley, and UCSB, the men are ranked 12th (of 248). Our goal for each team is to return to Nationals (20 women’s teams, and 20 men’s teams). We need your help to keep this success rolling!

Whether it’s flights to our next tournament in Texas, hotels in Washington State, or a trip to Nationals in Ohio, costs all add up. We also have practices three times per week, we run track workouts, we’re lifting in the gym, and we’re all full-time students. Our student athletes work extremely hard to balance education, athletics, and the jobs needed to fund it all.

Your donation will be used to offset the costs that are considered “team” costs including field rentals for practices, jerseys, hotels, car rentals at remote tournaments, and travel costs for our coaches. These generally total approximately $500 per player per season. This is in addition to each player’s travel costs that they are personally responsible for.

With 22 members on the men’s team, and 26 members on the women’s team, our goal of $3,000 dollars might seem small, but that would cover approximately 20% of these grouped expenses.

Learning Plans for Teachers

Over the years, I have frequently been asked by teachers and other youth programs if there are any lesson plans for Ultimate they could access.  There are a few out there, but, nothing specific to British Columbia that I was aware of.  Then in 2011, a group of students at the University of the Fraser Valley prepared units of lesson plans targeted at the Grade 4, Grade 7 and Grade 10 levels as a part of one of their Kinesiology program courses.  The lesson plans were all prepared to be consistent with the BC Ministry of Education’s Curriculum Guidelines for each grade.

I would like to thank Allison Howard for all her hard work, as one of the authors, in bringing these materials together and for putting them into a format that allows BC Ultimate to provide them to you. Thanks must also be given to Lindsay Lockhart, Angelina Rodenburg, Larisa Kaplanchuck, Leticia Frederickson and Jason Dumas for their hard work in preparing these lesson plans and for providing us with permission to use their materials.
If these lesson plans can be a benefit to you, please check out the new “School/Teachers” page.
