Spring into Shape with 5-on-5 Ultimate – BC’s 2017 Tournament Slate

Anyone who plays in the VUL will tell you that 5-on-5 ultimate is the place to be right now – smaller fields, shorter games, and smaller rosters, but certainly tons of fun! This form of Ultimate is typically played on fields that are around 1/2 the size of a normal Ultimate field and feature continuous play and non-stop sub on the fly action.
With the popularity of 5-on-5 play in leagues growing, it was just a matter of time until the tournaments starting coming – BC now has 4 different 5-on-5 events happening between March and May:
  • The VUL and BC Ultimate are hosting the second-annual Spring Equinox, in Vancouver’s Trillium Park on March 18 & 19, 2017. Tournament and registration information can be found HERE.

  • Juniors are always ahead of the curve –  the 2017 BC Junior 5-on-5 Championships have been running annually since 2010 and this year’s tournament will take place on April 15th at Empire Field on the Vancouver/Burnaby border. Email Ed Burnet for information.

  • Live in Interior BC? The 2017 Kamloops Legacy Performance Games will include 5-on-5 ultimate on April 22 & 23. See information HERE.

  • New this year – the first-ever Victoria 5-on-5 Ultimate Extravaganza takes place on May 20 & 21, conveniently filling in for the cancelled Whistler 5-on-5 tournament. See tournament information HERE.
Whether you’re a VUL 5-on-5 team or just a group of players looking to try 5-on-5 ultimate for the first time, register today for one of the several awesome events happening this spring!

Mixed Masters Division added to 2017 Mixed CUC

Players aged 33 and over will have another competitive playing opportunity this summer – Ultimate Canada has added the Mixed Masters division for the 2017 Mixed CUC in Saskatoon:

Ultimate Canada is pleased to announce that a Mixed Masters division will be added to the 2017 CUC: Mixed in Saskatoon. The division will act as a qualifier for the 2018 World Ultimate Masters Club Championships.

The decision to add the Mixed Masters division is based on strong interest from athletes who would like to compete in the division, the desire to provide a qualification tournament for the World Masters Ultimate Club Championship, and to provide a mixed opportunity for masters-aged players. The impact on other divisions, including the Mixed division and Women’s Masters division, was considered when deciding to add the new division. While it may affect some programs, the competition committee and board of directors felt there was sufficient support and benefits to add the division in 2017.

The 2017 Mixed Masters division will have a minimum age requirement of 33 years for both genders on December 31st of the year of CUC (athlete must be born in 1984 or earlier). The initial division is planned to be 6-teams in size, but may be expanded up to 8-teams if there is sufficient interest. The division will require a minimum of 4-teams registered by May 15, 2017 to occur. Registration for the division will open on May 1, 2017.
