BCU – Return to Play Plan

Together we can make a great comeback!

Sport is returning to British Columbia in accordance with the phases outlined in B.C.’s Restart Plan. At the request of the Province of B.C., viaSport has led the creation of a set of guidelines on how to resume sport while operating safely during this pandemic – the Return to Sport Guideline. Using this guideline, BC Ultimate has created a Return to Play (RTP) plan specificly for ultimate, which has been approved by the BCU Board of Directors.

The purpose of the RTP plan is to support our member organizations plans and guide the cautious, step-by-step safe return of ultimate in B.C. during this pandemic. The plan provides information which outlines the current rules under which our sport can return to the fields of BC.

BCU member leagues and organizations can adapt and/or adopt these PSO guidelines for use at the local level. It is recommended to have these approved by your own boards before resuming activities.

We know individuals are eager to resume physical activity and parents are eager to see their children active and participating in sport and recreation again. With the reopening of parks and both municipal and private recreation facilities in our communities, casual activities have also begun to resume. BCU is asking our leagues and organizations to forward the ultimate RTP plan to all your individual members. For the safety of our community, it is important to ensure that all activities take place in line with these plans.

Questions or comments can be directed via email to gm@bcultimate.ca.

The return to ultimate, as with all sport, needs to be done slowly and carefully, with the primary goal being that of protecting the heath of our athletes, coaches, organizers and volunteers.

UPDATE: On June 10th, 2020 the Government of BC announced and extension of the Emergency Program Act to protect sport organizations from liability due to COVID. This covers all sport organizations, including BCU and local leagues. Groups are still required to follow an approved Return to Play plan. A link to the order is included below.

On-Line Resources

During the current health crisis, BC Ultimate will be looking for on-line training opportunities from our stakeholders, members, partners and friends. While we encourage everyone in the ultimate community to practice self-isolation to help reduce the spread of COVID-19, we want to help provide some at-home opportunities for keeping physically and mentally healthy.

BC Ultimate is currently working with viaSport and other groups to create “Return to Play” guidelines for ultimate. This multi-phase guideline will be created in conjunction with viaSport and once approved will be distributed to all BCU member organizations to be used to help the disc sport community Return to Play, once the BC Health Authority has determined that Phase 1 can be undertaken in safety.

BC Ultimate is monitoring the current health situation and will make on-going decisions about our upcoming events:

May 23/24 – BC Junior High School & Senior Invite Championships – With the indefinite suspension of in-classroom sessions across the entire BC School System, this tournament has been cancelled for 2020.

June 6/7 – Flower Bowl – Due to the current COVID-19 health crisis and uncertainty surrounding the resumption of athletic activities and likely restrictions connected with any Return to Play plan, Flower Bowl 2020 has been cancelled by BCU.

June 13/14 – Disc Flicker – Due to the current COVID-19 health crisis and uncertainty surrounding the resumption of athletic activities and likely restrictions connected with any Return to Play plan, Disc Flicker 2020 has been postponed by BCU. We will be monitoring the health situation and if approved by government and health authorities we will consider re-scheduling Disc Flicker for late August or early September 2020. Monitor this PAGE for updates. It is possible that a re-scheduled Disc Flicker tournament would be restricted to residents of BC.

July 11/12 – BCUC Junior – Due to the current COVID-19 health crisis and uncertainty surrounding the resumption of athletic activities and likely restrictions connected with any Return to Play plan, BCUC Junior 2020 has been postponed by BCU. We will be monitoring the health situation and if approved by government and health authorities we will consider re-scheduling BCUC Junior for late August 2020. Monitor this PAGE for updates.

July 18/19 – BCUC Adult – Due to the current COVID-19 health crisis and uncertainty surrounding the resumption of athletic activities and restrictions by the municipality of Burnaby for field usage, BCUC Adult 2020 has been cancelled by BCU.
