Canadian National Championships – BC Junior Teams Shine!

Ultimate Canada recently held the 2016 Canadian Ultimate Championships in Edmonton, AB. As usual BC teams showed up in force at Nationals to challenge squads from around the country in the Junior Open and Junior Women’s divisions.

In the Junior Women’s division, 2 BC teams squared off for Gold, with Vancouver Misfit outlasting Alpha 14-11 in an exciting but windy final. Bonfire, a team based in North Vancouver came up a bit short in the Bronze medal game to finish 4th. Vortex from the Fraser Valley ended up 6th, with Vancouver Mischief finishing 8th and Savage from Richmond, in their first Nationals, ended up 10th.

The Junior Open division was a hard fought affair, with a number of upsets in pool play. Once the dust had settled on the final day Bonfire from North Vancouver placed 3rd to capture the Bronze. A trio of BC teams managed to round out the top 7, with Alpha finishing 5th, Misfit 6th and Vortex 7th. Mischief from Vancouver came up on the wrong end of the “ninals” game and finished 10th. The boys from Richmond’s Savage placed 12th in their first go around at Nationals.

BC Ultimate is proud of all the BC Junior teams who made the trip to Edmonton for Canadian Nationals, and we look forward to the continued development of Junior Club teams around the province. In 2017 we are sure that we will see our teams once again compete at the highest level of the sport in Canada when they attend Nationals in Ottawa, ON.

BC Provincial Team selections – 2016 Alpha team rosters

BC Ultimate is proud to announce the rosters for our 2016 Provincial Junior Men’s and Women’s teams!
On May 1st over 150 of the best and brightest BC Junior Ultimate players came to Empire Field in Vancouver for the teams’ open tryouts. A total of 41 BC High Schools were represented.
“This year’s tryouts for the Provincial team were the most competitive in the history of the program”, commented former Provincial team member and current women’s head coach Rena Kawabata. “We are so excited to keep seeing the level of juniors talent in British Columbia getting higher, the future of our sport looks so bright.”
Over the course of 4 hours, head coaches Jon Hayduk and Rena Kawabata along with a dozen other assistants and evaluators put the players through their paces.
“The explosion of Ultimate at the High School level in BC has been incredible” noted BCU GM Brian Gisel, “The talent pool is very deep in the province and our 2016 squads will reflect that.”
Following the Open tryout 80 players made the cut to the invite tryouts on May 4th. Players, coaches and evaluators went through 3 more hours of drills and scrimmages. The depth of talent was impressive and in the end selecting the players for each team was extremely difficult.
After some difficult choices, the following players have been selected to the BC Provincial junior program, which will compete as “Alpha” for the 2016 summer season. BCU would like to thank the participants and we look forward to watching all BC junior teams this summer.
